Virtual Domotic System

Development of systems aimed to improve the usability of domotic gateways for general population and, particularly, for limited mobilitly people (disabled or elderly people).

Depending on the technical solution implemented, current building automation systems provide different user interfaces, most of them oriented to advanced or technology-proactive users. Even the traditional text-based menus, where it is necessary to navigate to find a device or to launch a command, they present significant limitations to average users. Besides, the user usually receives limited feedback about the devices status (lights, shutters, air conditioning systems) or the acknowledgment of commands sent to the control devices.

This project emerged as an answer to this need, with the aim of providing highly usable and intuitive interfaces aimed to facilitate user interaction with building control solutions. Through this project, the conceptual structure of the VDS was successfully designed and implemented it into a fully functional real system, showing the technical feasibility of the idea.

The VDS resulted in an easy-to-use application, with an extremely intuitive user interface. This allows the potential users to extend to non-technical people that will find a very appropriate tool to control the energy consumption in buildings. Handicapped people or those with limited mobility can also carry out vigilance tasks by checking the status of electronic devices using the VDS.

The VDS provides a novel and enhanced user interface for residential gateways, based on 3D virtual environments and interfacing techniques. It supports multiuser features, in such a way that every registered user can use the residential gateway, controlling the real world.
