El IoTMADLab tuvo una destacada participación en elSmart City Expo World Congress 2024, celebrado en la FIRA de Barcelona los días 5, 6 y 7 de noviembre. Durante este evento, reconocido a nivel mundial por reunir a líderes en innovación urbana y tecnología, la Oficina Digital del Ayuntamiento de Madrid junto a la UPM, presentó las actividades del Laboratorio de Inteligencia de Ciudad en el stand Espacio Madrid Capital Digital. Este stand permitió a los visitantes conocer de cerca las soluciones y proyectos tecnológicos que están transformando el entorno urbano de Madrid y que anticipan la ciudad del futuro.

El miércoles 6 de noviembre, Guillermo del Campo, Director Técnico del IoTMADLab CEDINT-UPM, ofreció una ponencia titulada “Colaboración I+D+i Madrid – Universidades”. Durante su intervención explicó los detalles del nuevo convenio entre el Ayuntamiento de Madrid y la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, mediante el cual se ha creado un espacio de colaboración física y virtual que impulsa la innovación y la excelencia en tecnologías de última generación. El objetivo es la implementación de servicios municipales inteligentes y sostenibles con el ciudadano como foco, mediante el despliegue de redes y dispositivos IoT, conectividad 5G-SA, ciberseguridad e inteligencia artificial, entre otros. Además, los visitantes tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar de primera mano los avances en los que IoTMADLab está trabajando en la implementación de una arquitectura de red IoT neutra, abierta e interoperable, así como  su integración en una aplicación de gemelo digital basado en realidad virtual.

Este tipo de eventos subraya la importancia de la colaboración entre la administración municipal y la universidad en la búsqueda de soluciones innovadoras que transformen nuestras ciudades en lugares más habitables y sostenibles. El IoTMADLab continúa comprometido con la investigación y desarrollo en el ámbito del IoT, y su participación en foros internacionales refleja la relevancia de Madrid en la esfera global de la tecnología urbana.

Con este tipo de colaboraciones, el Ayuntamiento de Madrid continúa promoviendo los esfuerzos enmarcados en la estrategia Madrid Capital Digital, para impulsar el ecosistema innovador de la ciudad y la creación de soluciones digitales que mejoren la calidad de vida de los ciudadanos.

El pasado 24 y 25 de octubre, el Centro de Domótica Integral (CEDINT) de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid albergó una reunión plenaria del proyecto Europeo SkiComCu a la que acudieron, tanto de forma presencial como online, diferentes representantes de los socios del consorcio.

En la reunión se presentaron los avances de los diferentes paquetes de trabajo, tratando asuntos como el marco estratégico a largo plazo y metodología  para el aprendizaje permanente de SkiComCu, el diseño y desarrollo de la Plataforma  SkiComCu con implementación de herramientas XR. 

Adicionalmente, los investigadores del CEDINT presentaron sus instalaciones para resaltar las capacidades tecnológicas de sus laboratorios de Realidad Virtual e Internet de las Cosas. Durante el recorrido, los asistentes pudieron explorar las diversas posibilidades que la Realidad Extendida ofrece para mejorar la formación de distintos perfiles profesionales en el ámbito de la minería y metalurgia del cobre. De manera similar, se resaltaron las posibilidades de crear entornos avanzados de Realidad Virtual y Aumentada para simular situaciones operativas complejas, permitiendo que  los trabajadores practiquen protocolos de seguridad, operen maquinaria virtualizada y se  enfrenten a escenarios de riesgo en un entorno controlado. 

Estas tecnologías ofrecen un valor añadido a la formación en sectores de alta exigencia,  adaptándose a las necesidades específicas de la minería y la metalurgia para mejorar la  seguridad y eficiencia de los procesos.  

Con estas iniciativas, el CEDINT se consolida como referente en la innovación  tecnológica aplicada a la industria, demostrando su compromiso con la transferencia de  conocimiento y el desarrollo de soluciones de impacto para el sector.

Seoul, South Korea, was the setting for “Smart Life Week 2024”, an international congress on the Internet of Things (IoT) and its impact on the quality of life of citizens and the development of smart cities. The event took place from October 10 to 12, 2024, with the participation of the city of Madrid. Mr. Fernando de Pablos, General Director of the Digital Office of the Madrid City Council and Mr. Fernando Alvarez, Deputy Director of Digital Transformation of the Madrid City Council, Mr. Manuel Sierra and Mr. Guillermo del Campo, professors of the Polytechnic University of Madrid have presented the activities of IoTMADLab.

Fernando de Pablo was a speaker at the “Global CDO Conference”, where he presented his talk entitled “Digital Transformation and AI for Human Centric Services in Madrid”. During his speech, he highlighted the various initiatives that the Digital Office of the Madrid City Council is implementing to promote the use of technology to improve the efficiency of municipal services and the quality of life and well-being of citizens.

The Madrid delegation was also present at the “Smart Life” exhibition. At their stand they had the opportunity to share knowledge, experiences and advances in the application of IoT in the urban environment with the more than 20,000 people attending the event.

This type of event underlines the importance of collaboration between the municipal administration and the university in the search for innovative solutions that transform our cities into more livable and sustainable places. The IoTMADLab remains committed to research and development in the field of IoT, and its participation in international forums reflects Madrid’s relevance in the global sphere of urban technology.

With this type of collaboration, the Madrid City Council continues to promote the efforts framed in the Madrid Digital Capital strategy, to boost the innovative ecosystem of the city and the creation of digital solutions that improve the quality of life of citizens.

Nuestro laboratorio estuvo presente en el IV Congreso smart city RECI, un evento que reúne a los municipios que componen la Red Española de Ciudades Inteligentes, junto con entidades públicas del gobierno central y de la Comisión Europea y todos los agentes del sector, en un espacio de colaboración donde poner en común las tendencias, buenas prácticas y retos que presentan las ciudades inteligentes. Con dos stands en el espacio de Madrid Capital Digital, mostramos el trabajo de nuestro laboratorio en el diseño de espacios urbanos inteligentes, destacando cómo estamos contribuyendo a la construcción de una ciudad abierta, interoperable y cibersegura, orientada a mejorar la eficiencia y efectividad de los servicios públicos municipales.

Asun Santamaría son los «Guest Editors» de un número especial de la revista internacional de acceso abierto «Smart Cities», publicada por MDPI. Este número especial está dedicado a la integración de servicios urbanos, un tema crucial para el desarrollo de ciudades más eficientes, resilientes y sostenibles. La edición reunirá a investigadores, expertos de la industria, planificadores urbanos y responsables de la formulación de políticas para discutir los últimos avances, desafíos y oportunidades en la integración de servicios urbanos, abarcando temas como estándares de datos, plataformas IoT, tecnologías de comunicación, interoperabilidad, sostenibilidad y participación ciudadana. The IoTMADLab, formed by researchers fromCedint-UPM and the Digital Office of the Madrid City Council, received last Tuesday the visit of the Delegation of Kazakhstan to study possible collaborations in the area of digital transformation and exchange experiences in this field and the development of technological innovation.

The Kazakh delegation, headed by Mr. Danat Mussayev, Ambassador at the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Spain, the Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Kanysh Tuleushin, Mr. Baurzhan Kankin, General Director of the Autonomous Cluster Fund “Park of Innovative Technologies” and Mr. Azamat Baimen, General Director of the Autonomous Cluster Fund “Park of Innovative Technologies” and Mr. Azamat Baimen, General Director of the Kazakhstan Innovation and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Kanysh Tuleushin and Mr. Baurzhan Kankin. Azamat Baimen, General Director of JSC “National Information Technologies”, were able to learn first-hand about our laboratory facilities, the projects we are implementing and the main achievements of the Digital Transformation Strategy.

Among the advances that were presented to the Kazakh delegation were the Smart Urban Spaces, the #EUI, the #5GCorridors and the Digital Twin, thus demonstrating the commitment of the Digital Office of the Madrid City Council and CEDINT in its goal of building an open, interoperable and cybersecure city with a more efficient data-driven management.

Madrid has also been discussed as a Digital Innovation Hub, through its innovation centers promoted and driven by the Madrid City Council (Madrid Innova) and the Data Processing Centers located mostly within the city through the association Distrito Madbit.

The visit is part of the Asian country’s strategy to establish strong digital partnerships throughout Europe and reinforces the positioning of Madrid as a Hub and digital pole of attraction and retention of investment and talent.

Kazakhstan has experienced significant advances in digital and online services. In a recent interview with EFE, Mr. Kanysh Tuleushin, Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, pointed out that the country “has been ranked by the United Nations as the 28th country in terms of e-governance and 8th in the world in online services”. A reflection of Kazakhstan’s commitment to online services is that “almost 95% of government services are now provided online through mobile applications,” according to Tuleushin. On the other hand, its ICT exports have grown fivefold since 2019, from $30 million in exports to $545 million.

The IoTMADLab, led by CEDINT-UPM and the Digital Office of Madrid City Council, through the public-private collaboration platform Forum for Madrid, received on Tuesday, April 23, the ‘IoT and Connectivity Award’ given by the Spanish Association of Telecommunications Engineers (AEIT), for its ability to catalyze the digital transformation of cities, promoting the use of intelligent and connected technologies, for more efficient management of resources and greater citizen participation in decision-making.

The award was given during the VIII Telecommunications Night, which recognizes the contributions made by companies, institutions and professionals in the ICT sector in the Community of Madrid. The award was collected by Fernando de Pablo Martín, General Director of the Digital Office at Madrid City Council, and Asunción Santamaría, director of CEDINT, and presented by Inmaculada Sánchez Ramos, president of AEITM, and Miguel Angel Jodra Martín, member of the AEITM Board of Directors.

The IoTMADLab is a physical and virtual space whose objective is to define a standardized open, neutral and interoperable IoT (Internet of Things) network model that allows, through a common language and the application of technologies such as the Internet of Things, 5G- 6G, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and cybersecurity, that Madrid’s equipment and facilities can connect and build an intelligent urban space that enjoys greater security, fewer emissions and responds more adequately to existing needs. The laboratory contributes to the creation of an urban innovation ecosystem and aims to serve as a reference for other cities when defining digitalization policies, aimed at improving services to citizens.

The laboratory aims to improve the city’s digital capabilities to reinforce Madrid’s positioning as a digital hub and pole for attracting and retaining investment and talent. A project that allows the capital to continue being a national and international benchmark, with the City Council as a key driver of the city’s digital transformation.

The Digital Office of the Madrid City Council has held an information day at the headquarters of the College of Civil Engineers, Canals and Ports in which it has presented the Digital Twin project of the city of Madrid, with which the City Council intends to optimize decision making. The general coordinator of the Mayor’s Office, Inmaculada Sánchez-Cervera, was in charge of welcoming the participants of this day in which a demonstrator of the Digital Twin of Madrid was used.

The Digital Twin is one of the commitments acquired as part of the Digital Transformation Strategy of the Madrid City Council, which is called ‘Madrid Digital Capital‘, and which has as one of its three main objectives to provide intelligence to the city, with data-based management. The project consists of generating a virtual reproduction of the city and its services to carry out simulations and analyze the impact on the planning of new public policies, and on the operation and management of services. Thus, for example, the impact on the lives of citizens of any work, infrastructure or new service can be assessed prior to its implementation. In addition to improving the quality of life of its inhabitants, the Digital Twin contributes to optimizing decision-making by applying emerging technologies for hyperconnectivity and hyperautomation.

The objective of this day, in which the dean of the College of Civil Engineers of Madrid, María Dolores Esteban Pérez, and the director of the School of Civil Engineers, José Miguel Atienza Riera, have also participated, has been to share the progress made to date. moment in the development of a Digital Twin of Madrid, explaining the ongoing projects and showing demonstrators that illustrate the different use cases, as well as the work plan for the coming months until its launch.

With the contributions of the technicians of the Digital and IT Office of the Madrid City Council (IAM Madrid), a Digital Twin demonstrator has been presented, with which possible applications can already be advanced in multiple real cases, such as for example when analyze the flows of public and vehicles in a large event such as the Three Kings Parade, the traffic variables on the Bailén Bridge, mobility in the Landscape of Light and the surroundings of El Retiro Park, or in future developments such as Madrid New North.

The IoTMADLab was present during the session, in which the ‘Madrid Digital Capital’ strategy was also presented, in which the Digital Twin project is framed, as well as various transversal projects promoted by the City Council’s Digital Office. At the same time, and thanks to the collaboration of various experts from the College and School of Civil, Canal and Port Engineers, the communications company NTT DATA, EMT Madrid and the Digital Office itself, success cases of digital twins in other cities.

With the Digital Twin, the intensive use of city data and collaboration between relevant actors, key to the digital transformation and innovation of municipal services, Madrid will become a City 5.0 and a benchmark for other cities. national, and European in this area, due to its impact on people and the environment.

Last Tuesday, members of the IoTMADLab, formed by researchers from CEDINT and the Digital Office of the Madrid City Council, visited the facilities of Telefonica’s laboratory “TheThinX” to learn about the activities and developments that are being carried out and the associated experiences in the deployment of projects. 

TheThinX is an open laboratory where you can simulate the operation in real conditions of any IoT project before its massive implementation. It is one of the most advanced and best equipped IoT environments in the world, with state-of-the-art radio access, such as LPWA technologies.

The main objective of the visit was to study possible synergies or collaborations in key areas, such as IoT, 5G or cybersecurity. These are crucial aspects that are part of our strategy to develop smart urban spaces, always seeking to improve the efficiency, security and connectivity of municipal services through the implementation of advanced technologies and data-driven management. 

All this is part of the #MadridCapitalDigital strategy, whose mission is to promote digital solutions that improve the quality of life of citizens and promote greater citizen participation in decision-making.

El 15 de marzo, la Profesora Asunción Santamaría y el Dr. Luca Piovano del CEDINT-UP participaron en la tercera edición del Foro 5G de Madrid. Este evento, una iniciativa liderada por la Oficina Digital del Ayuntamiento de Madrid, se propone como catalizador en la promoción del desarrollo y ejecución de proyectos vinculados al despliegue de redes, infraestructuras y servicios basados en la tecnología 5G. La finalidad es crear una infraestructura abierta, neutra e interoperable que facilite la conexión y monitorización de los recursos, instalaciones y equipamientos urbanos, alineándose con los esfuerzos de la estrategia «Madrid, Capital Digital» y su correspondiente «Agenda 5G».

A lo largo de este encuentro, se destacaron los avances en los corredores y demostradores 5G activos en la capital, junto con los espacios urbanos inteligentes asociados y los potenciales casos de uso. Estos proyectos se están desarrollando en varias ubicaciones estratégicas, incluidas la Escuela de Telecomunicación, el Instituto Universitario de Investigación del Automóvil y el CEDINT de la UPM, así como en zonas urbanas clave como la Casa de Campo, Valdemingómez y Mercamadrid. La participación activa del CEDINT-UPM, a través del laboratorio IoTMADLab, subraya su compromiso con la innovación en los sectores del Internet de las Cosas (IoT) y los gemelos digitales, ejes centrales de su contribución a este ambicioso proyecto tecnológico.
