El Ayuntamiento de Madrid ha inaugurado IoTMADLAB en CEDINT - UPM

Thursday, 16 March 2023

The Madrid City Council has inaugurated the IoT (Internet of Things) laboratory of the city of Madrid, IoTMADLAB, thanks to a collaboration agreement with the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and the financing of the Madrid Business Forum. This initiative is part of the "Madrid Capital Digital" transformation strategy, presented last November. The city aims to become a hyperconnected city, with a better supply and demand of services, and thus achieve the best digital services for people, provide intelligence to the city, and reinforce Madrid's position as a digital innovation hub.

The interconnection of the different city devices is crucial, as each one speaks its own language, belonging to different manufacturers. The goal is to find a "common language" to analyze, interpret, and make decisions based on the data generated by the different city devices. Therefore, collaboration is taking place with companies that supply technology and provide services to the city, as well as with different technical managers of municipal services.

The IoT laboratory of the city of Madrid seeks precisely to facilitate the implementation of interconnected IoT systems, allowing physical objects to interact, communicate, and understand each other through the network. Specifically, it has been indicated that it will be implemented in at least three urban spaces before the end of 2023, while for next year, it will be carried out in the remaining four, and the chosen areas are expected to be heterogeneous.

It will work with tools that are constantly changing and evolving, such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, blockchain, and cybersecurity, and it is expected to achieve a dual purpose: energy savings and citizen comfort. In summary, benches, garbage cans, streetlights, containers, and other urban elements will be interconnected to offer a better service to citizens.
